At North Hykeham Tae Kwon Do, we believe coaching is about far more than teaching technique. Through our partnership with Active Lincolnshire, Leah, Thomas, Isabella and Layla are part of the Youth Coaches Peer Support Programme — a nationally recognised initiative designed to develop young leaders within sport and physical activity. Alongside gaining accredited qualifications, including safeguarding training, our Youth Coaches are learning how to support younger members, promote wellbeing and help create a safe, positive and encouraging environment across the club.

Our Youth Coaches play an important role within NHTKD. They assist with training sessions, encourage younger students, help build confidence and act as approachable role models within the club community. For many younger members, speaking to another young person can feel easier than speaking to an adult, and our Youth Coaches help bridge that gap with kindness, maturity and understanding. Their presence helps ensure every student feels seen, valued and supported both in and out of the training hall.

As part of the programme, our Youth Coaches have completed the UK Coaching Safeguarding Award and are involved in the “Be Safe – Have Fun” campaign. This campaign helps children and young people understand what it means to stay safe in sport while continuing to enjoy the activities they love. Using child-friendly resources and open conversations, the campaign encourages young people to speak up if something does not feel right, helping to create a culture where safety, trust and confidence are at the heart of sport.

Each of our Youth Coaches brings their own unique strengths to the club. Isabella, known as “The Wolf”, has a remarkable instinct for understanding how others are feeling and noticing when someone may need support. Leah, “The Owl”, brings calm reassurance and patience, particularly when helping younger students and those with additional needs. Layla, “The Worker Bee”, quietly notices the small details others can miss, offering encouragement and support in ways that make a real difference. Together with Thomas, they represent a new generation of young leaders who are helping shape a stronger, safer and more connected club environment.

At North Hykeham Tae Kwon Do, we are incredibly proud of the example our Youth Coaches set. They demonstrate that leadership in sport is not only about ability or achievement, but also about compassion, responsibility and looking out for others. By investing in young people and giving them the tools, support and confidence to lead, we are helping build a club culture where every member can feel safe, supported and inspired to grow.
